HOW HAPPY ARE YOU?
February 13, 2012

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”  Did you know you have absolute control over your own happiness?  Well, you do.  Happiness has to do with our own inner decision making power.  We can choose to be happy or we can choose to be sad.  It all has to do with the inner choices we make.

When an event happens in our lives, we already have a preconceived notion as to whether we will react or respond to the event.  Usually we act the same way we did the last time the event happened to us.  For example, we step up on the scales to determine how much we weigh.  We can react to the number we see on the scales or we can respond to it.  It really doesn’t matter what the number is.  It is simply how we respond or react to it.

My clothes have been getting tight on me for a while now.  I stepped up on the scales the other day and was a bit shocked at my weight – too much bread and sweets.  Now the question is what am I going to do about it?  I can get down on myself and believe that there is nothing I can do about my situation or I can make a commitment to change my eating habits and loose some of this weight.

We live our lives one day at a time.  We didn’t get in this mess in which we find ourselves overnight and we won’t get out of it overnight either.  It simply takes a step by step process to solve whatever problem we are facing.

Let us remember that Lincoln was right.  We are all just about as happy as we make up our minds to be.  Let us take the attitude that with God’s help we can be truly happy and make healthy changes in our lives now and into the future.
